CYCLING HISTORICAL ROUTE ”ĆIRO”

( Trebinje-Zavala)

The narrow-gauge railway that runs through Popovo Polje was opened to traffic on 15 July 1901 and abolished on 1 June 1976. People called these railways “štreke” and the recognizable soot steam locomotive was nicknamed “Ćiro”, which has remained until today. Today, only nostalgic memories remain of the trains, but that is why the former railway is used as a picturesque cycling path. The departure is from Trebinje, a beautiful town with a very rich history. Before leaving, be sure to visit the Old town of Trebinje and the City center.

On the 45 km long path next to the fantastic landscape of Popovo polje and the surrounding hills and mountains, you will see many curiosities: old railway stations, authentic Herzegovinian villages and one true wonder of nature - the Vjetrenica cave. It is the largest cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the richest in biodiversity in the world. Along the way you can visit several important and very beautiful old monasteries - Zavala, Duži and Tvrdoš. This path has almost no ascent and is very easy to ride, even though it is 45km long. Just bring plenty of water with you (especially in the summer months)
